If you are Devin Townsend, and considered the mad scientist of modern prog, you have the right to do everything – but even folk/country? Yes, you can! CASUALTIES OF COOL impress with beautiful, ethereal duets between Devin and female vocalist Che Aimee Dorval, known from the “Ki” album, add to that rootsy country-rhythms, a battered old telecaster, a constant melancholic atmosphere, and a natural swing, you should know, you are in for a treat! “My childhood was full of that type of music,” says Townsend. “At Christmas my grandfather would insist on the whole family sitting around singing uncomfortably along to Johnny Cash songs and Irish stuff like the Clancy Brothers. It was a big part of my childhood, it’s not like I’m putting on a new hat here.” But “Casualties of Cool” is not about nostalgia, it rather carries a quiet, night-time vibe, a sense of the artist’s true nature due to its intimate, honest feel. For Townsend, the themes of the record surround what he believes to be a bridge in his career; an acceptance of the artist he is today and embracing the fear of leaving behind what people know of him. Guests on the album are Morgan Ågren (Frank Zappa, Kaipa), renowned flute-player Kat Epple, and a 50-strong Swedish choir on “The Bridge”. 20 years after Devin Townsend’s career began “Casualties Of Cool” introduces us to the real Devin Townsend. Expanded with a bonus disc, and moody DVD with live, and interview footage, this is more than an album that’s just different!
